Understanding class 4 impact-resistant shingles
Class 4 is an impact-resistance classification, not a separate roofing material or a promise that a roof cannot suffer hail damage. For products tested to UL 2218, Class 4 is the highest classification in that test. The installed roof still includes flashings, vents, ridge components and other elements with their own performance limits.
GAF Timberline AS II is one example of an asphalt shingle with a UL 2218 Class 4 rating. Its manufacturer explains both the rating and the limits of its warranty. Ask for the current documentation for the exact product being quoted; do not assume that every shingle in the same brand or family performs identically.

Tradeoffs to discuss
- Class 4 does not mean hail-proof, and laboratory tests cannot reproduce every storm.
- Impact classification and manufacturer warranty coverage are separate questions.
- Any insurance discount depends on the carrier, policy, location and qualifying product.
What affects the installed cost?
Ask for the incremental price of the rated shingle with the rest of the roof scope held constant. Include compatible ridge caps, starter, underlayment and ventilation in the comparison. If insurance pricing is part of your decision, obtain confirmation directly from your insurer before counting any savings in the budget.
Ask for a written, itemized estimate for your property. A material price, warranty term or online planning range does not describe the complete installed roof.

Review GAF Timberline AS II’s current product page and packaging. It uses SBS-modified asphalt and carries a Class 4 rating; GAF also states that these shingles are not warranted to withstand hail damage. Other products should be compared using their own current technical sheets, not a brand-wide assumption.

Maintenance and repair planning
Keep the product identification and installation paperwork with your roof records. After a storm, have the entire roof assessed, including metal components and penetrations. A roof can need attention even when no shingle has visibly blown away.
Keep the roof specifications, product information and warranty paperwork together. If a problem develops, start with a roof inspection and a clear repair scope.

Questions before you choose
Will a Class 4 roof prevent all hail damage?
No. Impact-resistant shingles are not hail-proof. Storm conditions, aging, installation and the rest of the roof assembly affect the outcome.
Will my insurance premium go down?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed. Ask your insurer whether the exact product qualifies, what documentation is required and whether the policy terms change.
Does Class 4 also mean a higher wind warranty?
No. Wind performance and warranty eligibility are separate from impact classification. Compare each item in the manufacturer’s documentation.
