Class 4 vs. Standard Architectural Shingles in North Texas

Impact-resistant roofing · Dallas–Fort Worth

Class 4 is the highest classification in the UL 2218 impact-resistance test, but it is not a promise that a roof is hail-proof. The practical decision is whether the additional product cost and system requirements make sense for your roof, policy and ownership plan.

Side-by-side comparison

QuestionClass 4 impact-resistant shinglesStandard architectural shingles
Impact testingProduct has achieved UL 2218 Class 4 when the specific product/package is classified that way.May have a lower impact classification or no Class 4 classification, depending on the product.
Initial costOften higher because of product design and material differences.Often lower for mainstream architectural lines.
InsuranceMay qualify for carrier-specific credits or programs; verify first.Typically evaluated under the carrier’s standard roofing rules.
HailDesigned to perform better in standardized impact testing; not hail-proof.May be more vulnerable to certain impacts, but real storm performance varies.
WarrantyImpact rating and warranty are separate. Read exclusions and system requirements.Warranty still depends on product and installation requirements.
Repair / matchingExact product and color availability still matter for future repairs.Same issue: weathering and discontinued colors can make matching difficult.

What Class 4 actually tells you

UL 2218 is a laboratory impact-resistance classification. It gives buyers a standardized way to compare a product’s test performance. It does not reproduce every North Texas hailstorm and should not be described as a guarantee against hail damage.

For example, Owens Corning currently describes Duration STORM as Class 4, while Malarkey lists Vista as Class 4. Other lines from the same manufacturers can carry different classifications. Always verify the exact product quoted.

When the upgrade is worth comparing

  • Your insurer gives a meaningful documented benefit for the exact qualifying product.
  • You expect to own the property long enough to value the added initial investment.
  • You want a specific Class 4 product for reasons beyond insurance, such as its design, construction or warranty package.
  • The roof replacement is already planned and the upgrade can be compared on the same full-system scope.

Questions to ask before paying more

  • What is the exact manufacturer and product line?
  • Where is the impact classification shown in the current technical data or packaging?
  • Does my insurer recognize this product, and what documentation is required?
  • Does the policy change deductibles, coverage, depreciation or cosmetic-damage treatment for impact-resistant roofing?
  • What roof-system accessories are included in the proposal?
  • What does the product warranty say about hail or impact damage?

Common questions

Is Class 4 the highest UL 2218 rating?

Yes. Class 4 is the highest classification in the UL 2218 impact-resistance test.

Will my insurance company discount a Class 4 roof?

Possibly, but not automatically. Programs and eligibility differ by insurer, policy and product. Ask your carrier for the exact requirements in writing.

Does Class 4 mean I will never have a hail claim?

No. It is a laboratory impact classification, not a no-damage guarantee for every real storm.
