Roofing Warranties Explained

Materials · Workmanship · Written coverage

A roof proposal can mention several warranties that cover different things. Before you choose a system, identify who stands behind each warranty, which problems it covers and what documents you will receive. Your project’s written warranty is the place to confirm the actual terms.

Three kinds of protection to distinguish

Manufacturer’s material warranty

Addresses defined manufacturing defects in the covered products. The remedy, covered components and period depend on the product and warranty.

Contractor’s workmanship warranty

Addresses covered installation work under the contractor’s written terms. Confirm the duration, exclusions, service procedure and who is responsible for the work.

Enhanced system warranty

Some manufacturer programs add coverage when product, contractor and installation requirements are met. The selected program may require registration and may include different benefits.

For example, GAF’s residential warranty comparison distinguishes material coverage, workmanship, tear-off and disposal across its programs. Installing a GAF shingle does not, by itself, mean a roof receives every enhanced benefit.

Questions to ask before signing

Ask aboutConfirm in writing
Covered work and productsShingles, accessories, flashings and labor included in this particular warranty.
Coverage periodStart date, duration and whether the available remedy changes as the roof ages.
Repair costsWhether covered remedies include labor, tear-off, disposal or other costs.
Eligibility and registrationRequired products, installer qualifications, submission responsibility and proof of registration when required.
Exclusions and maintenanceHow storm damage, alterations, roof equipment, drainage and maintenance are addressed.
Selling the homeWhether transfer is allowed, deadlines, fees and how coverage changes.
Getting serviceWho to contact, notice requirements, records to provide and how an inspection is arranged.

What does “lifetime” mean?

It is a defined term in the applicable warranty, not a promise that every future roof problem is covered forever. Ownership, building type, product eligibility and changes in the available remedy can matter. Read the definition and the exclusions together.

Your Roofing Giant project

When reviewing a Roofing Giant proposal, ask us to identify the workmanship coverage and any manufacturer warranty included in that scope. Keep the signed agreement, product list and warranty documents together. If a registration or certificate is required, confirm who will complete it and how you will receive confirmation.

This guide explains the questions to ask; it does not add to or replace your written warranty. An existing roof may have different terms from a newly proposed system. Repairs and complete replacements may also have different coverage.

If a problem appears

  1. Protect people and document the symptom. Note the date and take safe photographs. An active leak needs prompt attention.
  2. Find the project documents. Have the installation date, agreement, warranty name and any prior repair records ready.
  3. Contact the correct issuer. Follow the notice and claim instructions in your warranty. For work performed by Roofing Giant, start with customer service or call (469) 498-6772.
  4. Confirm the next step. Ask how inspection, emergency measures and any permanent work should be handled under the applicable terms.

Warranty and insurance are separate

A product or workmanship warranty and a homeowners insurance policy address different risks. Do not assume that a storm loss is a warranty claim or that every leak is insured. Review the relevant document and use our insurance claim process guide for the insurance side of the process.

Common questions

Is a material warranty the same as a workmanship warranty?

No. Material coverage concerns covered product defects. Workmanship coverage concerns covered installation issues. The issuer and terms may differ.

Does every roof receive an enhanced manufacturer warranty?

No. Enhanced programs have eligibility requirements. The exact system and selected warranty must be confirmed for the project.

Can I transfer my warranty when I sell the house?

Possibly. Transfer rules, deadlines and any fees depend on the warranty. Check the actual document before assuming coverage carries over.

Does this page set my warranty term?

No. The signed project agreement and applicable issued warranty documents establish your coverage. Contact Roofing Giant if you need help identifying the documents for your project.
