Attic Ventilation Calculator

Roofing Giant · Free tool

An attic that cannot breathe cooks shingles from below, traps moisture and raises cooling bills. This calculator applies the International Residential Code ratio to your attic floor area and tells you how much intake and exhaust you need, in square inches of net free area and in real vents.

Your attic

Based on the International Residential Code ratio of 1 sq ft of net free area per 150 sq ft of attic floor (1:300 with a vapor retarder or balanced ventilation), with 50 to 60 percent of the total at the eaves. Vent NFA values are typical manufacturer figures; check the label on the products you choose.

How balanced attic ventilation works Cross-section of a house: cool air enters through soffit vents at the eaves, rises along the underside of the roof deck, and hot moist air exits through a ridge vent at the peak. Balanced intake and exhaust keep the attic close to outdoor temperature, which extends shingle life and lowers cooling costs. Balanced attic ventilation: intake low, exhaust high Intake: soffit vents50–60% of net free area Intake: soffit ventsboth eaves Exhaust: ridge vent40–50% of net free area, at the peak Hot, moist attic air rises and leaves Rule: 1 sq ft of net free vent area per 150 sq ft of attic floor (1:300 with a vapor retarder), split between eaves and ridge.
Balanced ventilation: cool air in at the soffits, hot moist air out at the ridge.

Why balance matters

Intake first

Exhaust vents cannot pull air the soffits do not supply. Blocked or painted-over soffit vents are the most common ventilation failure we find on inspections.

Do not mix exhaust types

Ridge vents with turbines or power fans short-circuit: the strongest vent pulls air from the weakest one instead of from the soffits.

Baffles at the eaves

Insulation pushed into the eaves blocks intake. Baffles keep a clear channel from soffit to attic.

Signs your attic is under-ventilated

  • Shingles curling or losing granules early on south and west slopes
  • Attic temperatures far above outdoor temperature on summer afternoons
  • Rusty nail tips, frost or condensation on the underside of the deck in winter
  • Ice dams, mold or a musty smell
  • A manufacturer warranty claim denied for “improper ventilation”

Ventilation is checked on every 30-point inspection and corrected as part of a replacement. The code references are on the roofing codes page.
