NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt

Malarkey’s current name for the asphalt technology used across its shingle line is NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt. Malarkey describes it as high-grade asphalt strengthened with rubber and plastic polymers to improve flexibility, granule retention, tear strength and all-weather resilience.

Impact classification

Current Vista® AR technical data lists UL 2218 Class 4. Class 4 is a laboratory impact classification—not a promise of no hail damage and not hail-damage warranty coverage.

Resist black streaks

Vista® AR uses algae-resistant 3M™ copper granules and carries a 25-year algae warranty for blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma), subject to Malarkey’s written exclusions and limitations.

Retain color granules

NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt is designed to improve granule embedment and retention while helping the shingle accommodate thermal cycling.

Formulated sealants

SEBS polymer modified asphalt sealant holds the shingle down in high wind, with two lines of rain sealant in the lamination area. Flexible to 0°F for freeze-thaw cycles.

Superior shingle strength

More resistant to tearing and nail pull-out than traditional oxidised asphalt, reducing blow-offs in high winds.

The Zone®: better fastener placement

Malarkey’s patented larger nailing area gives installers a larger fastening target intended to help nails penetrate both shingle layers and support resistance to uplift, blow-off and installation-related leaks.

Wind warranties

Current Vista® AR documentation lists a 110 mph (177 kph) standard wind warranty and a 130 mph (209 kph) enhanced wind warranty. The enhanced term is a qualifying warranty provision, not a universal physical wind rating. Malarkey’s current warranty guidance says the Enhanced Wind Warranty is automatically included with Certified Pro, Premium and Commercial warranties and is otherwise available for architectural shingles when four nails are used, or as required by code. Exact eligibility remains subject to the current written warranty and qualifying system requirements.
