DFW Roof Answers — The Official Roofing Giant Podcast · Episode 3 · October 19, 2026
Water pouring over a gutter does not automatically prove the roof is leaking. It often points to a blockage, alignment issue, outlet obstruction, concentrated roof runoff, or poorly directed discharge. This episode explains what Dallas–Fort Worth homeowners can observe safely and what needs a professional inspection.
Five checks that help locate the problem
- Where the overflow starts: one localized section, a roof-valley corner, or the entire run. Do not diagnose gutter sizing or roof damage from appearance alone.
- Downspout outlet and joints: look from the ground for disconnects, visibly loose elbows or water escaping where it should not.
- Where water lands: avoid directing runoff against the foundation, toward neighbors or into hidden drains without checking their function.
- Gutter and roof-edge attachment: note sagging sections, leaking joints and staining behind the gutter; let a trained contractor examine flashing and fascia.
- When it happens: overflow only in intense rain differs from repeat overflow in ordinary rain, and guards do not eliminate maintenance.
Safety and documentation
During thunder or severe weather, stay indoors. The National Weather Service recommends waiting at least 30 minutes after the last thunder before resuming outdoor activities. Do not climb on a roof, use a ladder on unstable wet ground, approach electrical hazards, or enter floodwater to investigate. When safe, record a short video of the overflow, the affected wall or corner, and any standing water at ground level.
For recurring ponding against the home, a drainage specialist may be needed in addition to a roofing contractor. Water staining does not by itself prove an active roof leak. Roofing Giant is a roofing contractor; we do not make insurance coverage decisions or act as a public adjuster.
