Hail Damage Self-Check for Your Roof

Roofing Giant · Free tool

Not sure whether the last storm hurt your roof? Answer ten questions about what you can see from the ground and around the house. The self-check scores the usual hail indicators and tells you whether a free roof-level inspection is worth scheduling.

Answer ten quick questions
  1. Did hail of one inch (quarter-size) or larger fall at your address, or did a storm report list it nearby?

  2. Are there new dents on gutters, downspouts, roof vents, AC fins or a metal mailbox?

  3. Do you see piles of shingle granules at downspout outlets or in gutters after the storm?

  4. Are window screens, patio furniture, or the paint on the deck or fence pitted or torn?

  5. From the ground, can you see cracked, missing, lifted or creased shingles?

  6. Have you (or an inspector) found soft dark spots or exposed black mat on shingles?

  7. Are neighbors getting roof inspections or replacements after the same storm?

  8. Is the roof more than 10 years old?

  9. Are there new ceiling stains, attic drips or damp insulation?

  10. Did the storm bring winds strong enough to bring down limbs or fences?

This self-check helps you decide whether an inspection is worth scheduling. Only a roof-level inspection can confirm hail damage, and insurance carriers rely on the inspector’s photographs and test squares, not a questionnaire.

Why soft metals matter

Hail large enough to bruise shingles almost always leaves dents in gutters, downspouts, roof vents, window screens and the aluminum fins on an air-conditioner condenser. Inspectors and adjusters look at these “collateral” surfaces first because they are easy to read; a roof with dented vents and stripped screens has almost certainly taken hits on the shingles too.

Bruised shingles do not always leak right away. The impact fractures the fiberglass mat and knocks granules loose, and the shingle then ages years in a single summer. That is why a roof can look fine after a storm and start failing the following spring.

Hail size reference and typical roof damage threshold Circles drawn to relative scale for pea, marble, dime, quarter, golf ball, tennis ball, baseball and softball hail with diameters in inches. Damage to asphalt shingles becomes likely at one inch (quarter size) and near-certain at golf-ball size and above; soft metals such as gutters and vents dent at smaller sizes. Bruised shingles lose granules and fail early even when no leak appears for months.

What to do next

  1. Note the date

Write down when the storm hit. Insurance claims are tied to a date of loss, and the NOAA storm database can confirm hail at your address.

  2. Photograph what you can safely see

Dented gutters, torn screens, granules at downspouts, debris. Do not climb on the roof.

  3. Get a documented inspection

A free Roofing Giant inspection produces test-square photos and a written report your insurer recognizes.

  4. Decide about a claim with real numbers

Use the deductible calculator and read the claim process guide before you call your carrier.

Read the full hail damage guide for photographs of bruising, granule loss and wind creasing, and use the storm lookup tools to verify the storm at your address.

Let an inspector settle it.
